World Autism Awareness Day

'The sixth annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2013. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.'

(The whole of April is dedicated to raising awareness of Autism).
There is a Facebook Fan Page here if you'd like to check it out.
Many teachers will have had the experience of teaching a child on the Autistic Spectrum.  Likewise many may have a child with autism in their family.  My experience is of both and I was keen to participate in this link up to raise awareness of this condition.
My bloggy pals and I are joining together to offer you a freebie to celebrate this special day.  You also have the opportunity of entering a Rafflecopter giveaway too!
The Rafflecopter is over at Danielle's - Crayonbox Learning - thanks so much Danielle for setting this up!

I created some Visual Adjectives Sheets in the hope that they may be of use to you and your students.

April Currently.....

I'm linking up with Farley over at Oh' Boy 4th Grade for this month's Currently.  This is always my favourite way to start a new month - it feels so positive!

Need I add to this?!  Won't embarrass hubby any further - lol!

I'm so happy our clocks have finally gone forward for Spring.  It's means it's light now until 8.30pm and will keep going that way - so happy!  It means we have so much more time to be outside and that makes me feel good!

Have been so upset about all the media coverage of our local farmers.  We had very unexpected snow blizzards, up to 12ft drifts, which caught everyone by surprise at the severity of it.  In remote parts of Ireland people have been cut off for over a week now and the surviving animals are starving.  Royal Naval Airforce Chinnocks have been dropping supplies, hoping to keep everyone going, as so far there is not a thaw in sight.  Thousands of newborn lambs have perished - it so sad and many farmers will have lost their livelihood.

I won't dwell on Holly, but I am trying very hard to keep the good memories to the forefront and not dwell on the experience of her passing.

Spending time with barking mad Blue makes me laugh!  I need Vitamin D in my body - so sunshine is on order - I just wish the courier would hurry up!

Will be starting treatment soon, so I expect to be transformed to a tall, slim blonde in the blink of an eye!  If I can't have that, a healthy body will do just fine.  (Unfortunately, I won't be back at at school this year).

Lastly, recent experiences and good bloggy friends have helped me realise that it's important to look forward and remain positive - you can't change things that have happened, but you can live in the moment to the best of your ability, and shape your future with a positive attitude!

I hope everyone has enjoyed a wonderful family time this Easter and a fabulous Spring break!

Check back soon for an awesome Autism Awareness Day link up.

Thanks and freebies!

Hi everyone!

I did respond in the comments section, but realise that some people maybe don't come back to check, so I really wanted to say something in this post.

I don't want to dwell on it too long.....but did want to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone who stopped by and commented.  In this tough world, it's good to know that there are so many compassionate people out there!
We're coping with the Holly-shaped hole we have going on here and did make that final trip to the beach - it was very special.  Blue is coping well, but just doesn't understand why he can't find her.  It's hard to watch, but he's young and will cope.

We got a beautiful card today from out vet, but I won't share the verse, (if you'd like it, please just drop me a note - it's very comforting), because it might set you all off again! I'm at the stage where the good memories are kicking in and I don't dissolve into floods every time when I think of her.  I appreciate, so much, the stories and heartache you have shared.  I know some people will say - 'it's only a dog' - but I know there's many more who understand that it feels like losing a member of the family.

Thank you all so much for your words of comfort.

Onto a lighter note.....

Many of you will know I have a TpT Spring Cleaning Sale on right now - there's loads of stores in the linky - so go fill that cart!

A heartbreaking day....

Those of you who read my blog posts, know how dear to my heart my fur babies are.  Last year I posted about how I worried for my Holly who was close to 17 and having some troubles.
Here she is, one last time.

This has truly been one of the toughest days ever.  Holly passed away this afternoon.  I was with her until  she drew her last breath and felt like my heart was being ripped out.
She was such a perceptive dog, my best friend and always there through life's up and downs.  I have been truly blessed to have my wonderful companion for such a long time and can't imagine, just yet, not having her by my side.  I feel like I have lost a family member, but know she was ready to go.
In my mind I was prepared for it, but I couldn't have guessed how the reality would be.  I just can't bear it at the minute and hope you will forgive me for such a personal post, but I had to do it.
This will be her little tribute from me, in print for all time.
We miss and love you Holly.
Please know you were my faithful and loving companion always.
We'll be taking you to your favourite beach tomorrow - one last time.........
I know you'd be saying this to me if you could.

Friend, please don’t mourn for me
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.
My body is gone but I’m always near.
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart
as long as you keep me alive in your heart.
I’ll never wander out of your sight-
I’m the brightest star on a summer’s night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach-
I’m the warm moist sand when you’re at the beach.
I’m the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.
I’m the first bright blossom you’ll see in the spring,
The first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I’m the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you’ll see that the face in the moon shine is mine.
When you start thinking there’s no one to love you,
you can talk to me through the Lord up above you.
I’ll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you’ll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.
I’m the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I’m the smile you see on a baby’s face.
Just look for me friend, I’m every place!

My Advice to You Linky Party

It’s easy to give advice, but much harder to take it.  My good intentions often fall by the wayside, but hopefully my tips will give you food for thought.

My advice to you when you’re feeling overwhelmed.....

Don’t try to be superwoman!  Don’t beat yourself up when you make mistakes. Evaluate and move on.  After 25 years teaching, I'm only beginning to manage this!  It’s the perfectionist in me and you, just let go – children are so forgiving!  Wipe the slate clean with a positive attitude, and don’t be afraid to share with colleagues – you are not alone.

Create a work/life balance that works for YOU.  Try not to be influenced by what others do – this only adds to the stress!  I was always first in and last out AND took loads of stuff home – I learnt the hard way!  I am totally not a morning person, so I now accept that I am happy to be in on time and stay late.  I never leave without being ready for the next day – preparation is key.  Be strict with yourself about bringing work home – often-times it is necessary, but try to limit how often you do it during the week.

This tip may sound silly, but I'm going to throw it out there - I downloaded a meditation to my iPod that can be completed in 5 minutes.  I do this at lunch time and honestly feel so much better for it!  It just clears my head and I feel so much calmer.  After this I go for a walk along the country lanes (with a colleague) – 15 minutes and I feel so refreshed and energised – I would be lost without this time and feel less tired for the afternoon session.  We natter about silly things and leave the classroom behind.

I have 29 students this year and still succumb to the pressure of ‘teaching’ them.  One valuable lesson I have learned is to make sure you have fun.  Don’t forget to play with your kiddos, talk to them and interact on a personal level.  Your students want a relationship with you, they want to hear your stories, see you smile and laugh – never lose sight of this – laughter is just the best medicine for all ills – make the time no matter what.  A positive, relaxed teacher creates a great learning environment and well-motivated children.

Leaving you with a smile....

To make up for it, I decided to offer a smaller pack of writing ideas.

It's in my Tpt Store if you are interested.  I had a lot of fun creating this pack, especially the limericks - I hope you like them!

This evening's post is to announce the birthday giveaway winners.  I will be contacting the two winners very shortly, as soon as I have all the files zipped up and ready for sending.

First:  Cecilia

SECOND PRIZE:  Entrant Number 11 was Angie, also with a guess of 50 for my age!

Second: Angie
Huge congratulations Cecilia and Angie!  I will be in touch over the weekend, as you also have some choosing to do!

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to join in the fun!  You all sent such sweet wishes and made my birthday feel very special!

I just wanted to write a short post this evening to thank everyone for their sweet birthday wishes.

I'm hoping medical leave will be over soon and I can get back to the classroom - I feel I'm ready for it - I'm getting cabin fever and missing my little ones!  So, yes, I have been a little cranky and your lovely wishes brought a smile to my face, a glow in my heart and really cheered me up - just what the doctor ordered!

Thank you also to my wonderful, generous bloggy friends who so kindly donated to the giveaway - some fabulous prizes for the pot!  I will announce the winners tomorrow and send out the products - thank you all for taking part in my bit of silliness! I loved all the guesses at my age and was in no way offended - much!  Just kidding - I had a right old giggle! If you still wish to enter, just click on the pic.
