Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
What can I say - I adored first grade and I adored my first grade teacher. Of all my school memories, Miss Boyd is the teacher who will forever have my heart! She taught in the same school throughout her teaching career. Many years later, I had the opportunity of teaching in my old school on a temporary contract. You can imagine just how nervous I felt entering the staff room on that first morning, finding out that she was still alive (!) and being instructed to call her Liz. My heart was pounding and all I could think about was that she was my hero! Of course she had no idea how I felt! Through time, as we became friends, we were able to laugh about it! My head still struggles to get around the fact that I receive a Christmas card from her every year and count her as a friend. When I was 6 years old - she was everything I aspired to be - I held her in such great esteem. From her I learned that I should be confident in my abilities and that I could be anything I aspired to be.
Here are three reasons why I am thankful for educators:
- My teachers motivated me to have a career in an age when this was not generally expected of women.
- They taught me that I had a right to voice an opinion.
- An educator may be the only source of affection, understanding and safety for a child. At school I was safe and unfettered by home problems.
